Quick, Easy, Classic Dessert with a Twist

It's a dessert. It can be a midnight snack. It can be an afternoon snack. It can even be breakfast. It actually can be used for any meal that you'd like to use it for. What is it, you ask?

------------------------

Well, it's applesauce of course! I had some left over applesauce from the other day when I made my chocolate chip cookies. The jar contained exactly 2 cups, and I had only used half a cup, and by my math that leaves me with a 1 1/2 cups. I was trying to figure out how to use it when on my facebook page one of my closest friends from ballroom left me a message on my wall. Here's what it said:

"I invented a weird sort of dessert yesterday and it made me think of you."

So obviously being the dessert fanatic and curious friend I immediately responded by asking what it was. Her response:

"The dessert was really easy, I heated up some apple sauce, added cinnamon and a little bit of vanilla extract and then added fresh blackberries to it. It was yummy. Made a good late night dessertish snack post-calculus class. haha."

So I thought, wow what a clever idea. I'll be able to use up my applesauce, and get a blog post from it too! It was great. So when I got to my room, I went ahead to make the dessert and added a little more of my own twist, and you can add your own twists too because this really goes well with just about anything.

Here's what you need (for my version):

  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 3/4-1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 yogurt cup (I used yoplait in vanilla)
  • those chocolate chip cookies from the other day

Utensils that you probably will be using:
  • Bowls (2-however many you'd like, depending on how big your servings are going to be)
  • spoons (once again depending on how many servings you make)
  • microwave
  • measuring cups and spoons

Here's what you do:

1. Applesauce. Pour your applesauce into a large microwavable bowl.
2. Microwave. Microwave the bowl of applesauce until it is warm, I say one minute and then add 30 seconds after checking it until you get your desired temperature.
3. Cinnamon and vanilla extract. Add your cinnamon and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined and thoroughly incorporated. The applesauce will get a darker color due to the cinnamon.
4. Bowls. Divide the applesauce mixture between your bowls according to your preferred serving size.
5. Yogurt. Top with the yogurt. Add the cookie on the side and enjoy.
6. Alternatives. You can even go the way my friend went which was adding fresh blackberries. Add some fresh fruit instead of the yogurt, add maybe ice cream. Like I say with every dessert when you decorate: be creative!

My friend also has her own blog that she just started writing in. You should check it out. Click here to see it!

And always:

Keep eating sweetly! :)
